Oedipus Rex / Antigone

In March 2024, Mart directed Stravinsky’s opera-oratorio ‘Oedipus Rex’ at the Dutch National Opera. As the opening performance of the Opera Forward Festival, the piece was presented in a double bill together with the new composition ‘Antigone’ by Samy Moussa, directed and choreographed by Nanine Linning. The cast was led Sean Panikkar as Oedipus, Dame Sarah Connolly as Jocasta and Nazmire Oral as the speaker.

It was Mart’s (unexpected) debut on the main stage of the Dutch National Opera. Together with Nanine Linning, he jumped in to take over the production four weeks before the planned premiere, after the original director had to withdraw. Working in tandem, they created a theatrical experience that took the political and social predicaments of the ancient city of Thebes as its central theme: bringing together the worlds of classical tragedy and of twentieth- and twenty-first-century music in a unique theatrical experience.

The double bill was critically acclaimed. Bachtrack wrote: “a double triumph for Dutch National Opera and Ballet”, and the Financial Times called it “an elegant, darkly moving double bill.”
